Croatia sets benchmark in sustainability

PAGE-17

Croatia has long been recognised as a frontrunner in sustainable tourism globally. Sustainability in Croatia is not a theoretical ambition, but a measurable and enforceable practice, says Tonči Glavina, Minister of Tourism and Sport, Republic of Croatia, at the 26th General Assembly of UN Tourism. He was all praise for Saudi Arabia hosting the landmark event.

Tonči Glavina, Minister of Tourism and Sport, Republic of Croatia, praised Saudi Arabia for hosting the 26th General Assembly of UN Tourism, noting the exceptional level of organisation, hospitality, and substance. “Our hosts went above and beyond — not only in creating a welcoming atmosphere, but also in delivering content that truly matters to tourism leaders worldwide,” he said.

A defining moment of the Assembly was the election of a new Secretary General — the first woman and the youngest ever appointed to such a leadership role within European agencies. Glavina said the milestone appointment sent a powerful signal about how tourism institutions are evolving. “It reflects how our sector is embracing change, inclusivity, and innovation, and how tourism continues to lead by example on the global stage,” he noted.

Sustainability framework

Croatia has long been recognised as a frontrunner in sustainable tourism, particularly in the implementation of sustainability through strategic frameworks and legislation. “Sustainability in Croatia is not a theoretical ambition, but a measurable and enforceable practice,” Glavina emphasised. “Every destination in Croatia is required to measure sustainability through clearly defined indicators.”

Collaboration with the Middle East

With the Middle East countries, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, pursuing ambitious sustainability agendas, Glavina sees strong alignment between Croatia and the Middle East. “We are on the same path,” he said. “There is immense potential to exchange knowledge, data and best practices — from policy frameworks to on-the-ground implementation.”

A 10-year vision

Looking ahead, Croatia’s long-term ambition is clear: to remain among the world’s leading sustainable tourism destinations while enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. “Our goal is to ensure that tourism enriches local communities without compromising our natural and cultural heritage,” Glavina said. “True sustainability means being willing to forgo some profits today so that future generations can benefit tomorrow.”
