Eco diversity: Egypt’s new mantra

PAGE-5

As Egypt prepares to unveil landmark developments — including the Grand Egyptian Museum — the country is entering a new phase of tourism growth built on diversity, accessibility, and sustainability. Ahmed Youssef, CEO, Egyptian Tourism Authority, outlines Egypt’s evolving tourism strategy, development of destinations, market priorities, and sustainability agenda.

Ahmed Youssef, CEO, Egyptian Tourism Authority, said that under the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Egypt is repositioning itself for global and regional travellers alike. “At the heart of Egypt’s tourism strategy is a campaign aptly titled ‘Unmatched Diversity’.”

Egypt’s strength lies not in a single product, but in the breadth of experiences it offers. “Decades ago, Egypt was known primarily for cultural tourism — our antiquities and museums,” he explains. “We then expanded into leisure tourism with beach, sun, and relaxation. Today, we are developing a much broader portfolio that includes eco-tourism, spiritual tourism, adventure tourism, and more.”

This diversity is reflected not only in experiences, but also in geography. From the Mediterranean coastline in the north to the Red Sea resorts, vast deserts, the Nile Valley, and dynamic urban centres, Egypt offers contrasting landscapes and accommodation styles — ranging from eco-lodges and tents by the sea to luxury five-star hotels along the Nile.

“With over 110 million people and thousands of years of history, our aim is to introduce Egypt’s culture and people to the world in a more authentic and contemporary way,” Youssef adds.

North Coast tourism

One of Egypt’s fastest-evolving tourism zones is the North Coast, traditionally a domestic summer destination that is now attracting international interest. “Over the past few years, we have seen growing demand from Europe and the GCC,” says Yousef. “Today, the North Coast is supported by three airports — Borg El Arab, Al Alamein and Marsa Matruh.” Major regional investments further underscore its potential. Mega projects such as Ras Al Hikmah, backed by the UAE, and a newly announced Qatari development highlight strong investor confidence and signal the future direction of Egypt’s leisure tourism offering.
