Sustainability powers Sun Siyam appeal

PAGE 10-1

‘Sun Siyam Care’ integrates environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community impact into its operations across the Maldives and Sri Lanka. In an exclusive interview with TravTalk, Chaminda Upul Kumara, Group Sustainability Manager, Sun Siyam, explains how certifications and eco-experiences are driving commercial value.

Dr Shehara Rizly Fernando

How is Sun Siyam leveraging sustainability as a differentiator?

Sustainability at Sun Siyam is embedded through our core framework, Sun Siyam Care, which focuses on four pillars: environmental responsibility, socio-economic development, cultural heritage, and sustainability management. These pillars guide every operational aspect, from renewable energy adoption and waste reduction to biodiversity conservation and community engagement. We are actively investing in solar energy, targeting 5 megawatts by 2026, while also pioneering large-scale initiatives like plastic upcycling. At our resorts, waste plastic is transformed into usable materials such as furniture. Additionally, projects like our elephant conservation initiative in Sri Lanka reflect our commitment to wildlife protection. These efforts are not standalone — they are integrated into our brand identity as a ‘home of Maldivian spirit’, where sustainability and culture go hand in hand.

How do certifications influence trade partners and positioning?

Third-party certifications are critical in validating our sustainability claims. Previously, all our Maldives and Sri Lanka resorts were Travelife Gold certified. From 2026, we are transitioning our Maldives properties to Green Globe certification, which aligns with global standards beyond Europe.

However, in Sri Lanka, we continue with Travelife due to its strong recognition among European tour operators and DMCs.

Is sustainability driving demand and revenue growth?

Absolutely. Sustainability is no longer optional — it is a key booking driver. Research indicates that over 80 per cent of travellers are seeking sustainable options, with Gen Z showing a significant surge in demand.

We are seeing increased engagement from agents and OTAs asking detailed questions about our sustainability practices. Certifications such as Green Globe and initiatives like food waste reduction programmes provide assurance and make our properties easier to sell. Ultimately, sustainability enhances brand value, strengthens partnerships, and directly contributes to revenue growth.

What eco-conscious experiences do you offer guests?

We offer a wide range of immersive sustainability experiences. Guests can participate in coral restoration, marine conservation, and eco-conscious diving programmes led by marine biologists. Our partnerships with global diving initiatives promote turtle conservation and reef awareness.
